Critical Lenz: Haiti

artist's statement

this photo exhibit is dedicated to symphonie, the adopted child of a friend who left haiti too young to remember much about it. i often wonder what she must think of her old home after watching news reports and reading articles in the press. i wonder how these portrayals of haiti have affected her self concept. i hope that these images will give her and others a brief glimpse of some of the beauty and dignity of haiti and it's people. this is just a tiny fraction of the warmth i experienced on my last trip there in the summer of 2002.

i feel that my impression of the haitian spirit is best represented by the bob marley lyric which states, "we're the survivors .. . . yes, the black survivors."
